The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, on Thursday laid a new legislative instrument before Parliament to prohibit mining in forest reserves, following growing public concern over environmental destruction.
The instrument, known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) (Revocation Instrument, 2025), will revoke L.I. 2462, enacted in 2022, once it matures after 21 sitting days.
“Obviously, that led to the new L.I. 2505 which was entered into force on June 2, 2025,” Kofi-Buah told reporters in Parliament, referring to earlier amendments that limited presidential powers to permit mining in forest areas.
He said the decision followed sustained public pressure and consultations with environmental experts.
“It clearly must send a message that this government is committed to basically ensuring that we continue to protect our pristine forest reserve and our environment,” the minister said.
“Every step we are taking is clearly in line with what President Mahama has been preaching,” he further added.
The government said it would continue to enforce existing guidelines on mining issued in 2020 to safeguard forests and water bodies.
