The New Force Movement has issued a formal apology following a widely condemned incident involving one of its security personnel, who was caught on video physically assaulting an alleged ‘intruder’ during the funeral of the Mamponghene over the weekend.
The video, which has since gone viral on social media, shows a member of the movement’s security detail attacking an unarmed civilian who had attempted to approach Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, the leader of the New Force.
In a statement signed by the group’s General Secretary, Charles Yomekpe, the movement expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as “saddening and disturbing”.
“We extend our sincerest apologies to the victim and their family and to all Ghanaians who rightly expect better conduct from those associated with our movement,” the statement read.
Acknowledgement of Error
The New Force admitted that the individual who was assaulted posed no threat and should have been treated with the dignity and respect accorded to every Ghanaian. The group condemned the actions of its security member, labelling them “unjustifiable” and “entirely out of line” with the New Force’s democratic and people-first ideals.
“Violence has no place in a democracy, where every citizen has the right to engage and express themselves freely,” the statement emphasised.
Internal and Legal Action Promised
The movement has launched an internal investigation into the incident and promised that the perpetrator will face full accountability—both legally and through internal disciplinary measures.
“We are committed to restoring public confidence by ensuring that such behaviour is never repeated,” Yomekpe stated.
He also thanked members of the public and civil society for their vigilance and support in holding the movement to high ethical standards.
