To mark Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, Netflix has announced a fresh collection of Nigerian movies and series.
These exciting stories of different genres made by top filmmakers like Charles Okpaleke, Femi Adebayo, Clarence Peters, Omoni Oboli, and Zeb Ejiro, will be premiering throughout the final quarter of 2024, starting in October.
According to Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for the Middle East and Africa, “It is essential to us that Netflix remains the premier destination for the best in Nigerian storytelling for our members in Nigeria. We aim to continue celebrating the country’s rich and vibrant culture and history by acquiring a variety of exciting licenced titles from Nigeria’s best filmmaking talent.”
Producer and Co-founder of Play Network Studios, Charles Okpaleke, said, “Hijack 93, is a fictional story inspired by true events of a Nigerian Airways flight that was hijacked in 1993 by some Nigerian teenagers. Such historic events that are part of the spine of our democracy have the tendency to dissolve before the next generation has knowledge of it. As a filmmaker, my focus is telling our true African stories for the world to see.”
Netflix continues to demonstrate its dedication to featuring the cultural and entertainment strength of Nollywood with its planned 2024 lineup, starting off with Hijack 93, an exciting thriller based on true events.
Celebrating the anniversary of the 1993 Nigerian elections, Hijack 93 premieres on 25 October. The movie tells the adventurous tale of four youths who seize control of an aircraft to demonstrate against the cancelled 1993 election. While tensions rise, they need to consider the passengers’ safety and their own freedom when deciding their demands.
Produced by Play Networks Studios (known for Blood Vessel and Glamour Girls), Hijack 93 features a stellar ensemble cast including, Nancy Isime, Sharon Ooja, Jemima Osunde, Idia Aisen, Adam Garba, Nnamdi Agbo, Akinsola Oluwaseyi, Allison Emmanuel, Efa Iwara, and Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo.
Netflix Africa announces new releases: Inside Life on 11 October, Domitilla on 8 November, Sisi London 29 November, and Seven Doors on 13 December .
Aníkúlápó, Nigeria’s fan-favorite series, returns for Season 2, is in the pipeline in Ibadan and Ghana, with returning leads Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, and Lateef Adedimeji, alongside new cast members.
Speaking about the upcoming season, Afolayan says, “We’re overjoyed that Netflix has renewed Anikulapo for another season. We take pride in telling our stories authentically and this series is a powerful reflection of Nigerian culture and history.”
“This season will explore the complex realities of the slave trade, with actors from Portugal, Ghana, and Nigeria, showing the global connections in our history. Filming in Oyo State and Ghana helped us ground the story in places rich with our heritage. We’re excited to continue sharing this journey with the world and celebrating the depth of our culture.”
