Senegal’s President proposes amnesty for political protest offences

Senegal's President Macky Sall announced a bill for amnesty to address the unrest experienced in the country since 2021.

President Macky Sall announced on the 26th of February that he would present a bill for amnesty for acts committed during the unrest experienced in the country since 2021.

The amnesty bill will be presented to the National Assembly on February 28th. The bill has been designed to address the unrest that has occurred since 2021, especially following the announcement of the election postponement in early February, which was initially scheduled for last Sunday, 25th February.

Since 2021, there has been unrest in Senegal due to the arrest and imprisonment of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

This has resulted in the deaths and arrests of many Senegalese citizens, particularly the youth who support Sonko.

Sall’s postponement of the elections has faced pressure from local and international actors, especially given Senegal’s reputation as a democratic model for many African countries. The local force has been from the Aar Sunu Election Platform(Let’s protect our election), which plans to protest this week.

Last Friday, President Sall said his mandate as president will end on the 2nd of April, but it is still unclear when the Senegalese elections will take place.
