NDC’s Elikplim Agbemava urges disciplinary action over Sammy Gyamfi’s cash gift to Agradaa
Agbemava’s comments mark a rare and candid internal critique from within the NDC ranks, reinforcing growing calls for consistency, integrity, and reform in public service behaviour

Prominent legal practitioner and National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Elikplim Agbemava has called for decisive disciplinary action over the recent viral video showing NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi giving money to controversial religious figure Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (12 May), Agbemava said his decision to publicly address the matter was motivated by a desire to protect the integrity of public office and set a positive example for young Ghanaians.
“This is not a personal issue,” he said, “but those of us in sensitive positions must act in ways that reflect the expectations of our people.”
Agbemava expressed concern that public discourse around the incident has largely ignored the deeper implications of conduct in public office. “We cannot create a culture where every action is easily explained away, without any standard of accountability,” he warned.
Challenged on whether he had made similar public donations, Agbemava dismissed the comparison, noting that Ghana’s cultural practice of giving at funerals differs from what was shown in the video.
He emphasised that “context matters” and criticised the optics of publicly counting large amounts of money from a vehicle as a lapse in judgement and a security risk.
He also raised alarms about the broader message such conduct sends to young people whose first experience in leadership comes through politics. “If your first contact is political power, without the benefit of life experience, these lapses become likely,” he said.
Agbemava concluded by urging the application of the NDC’s newly launched Code of Conduct. “People are hurt. Some action must be seen so they know they didn’t vote for nothing,” he said.
While acknowledging the President’s discretion in disciplinary matters, he emphasised that visible accountability was necessary to maintain public trust.
