Essilfie Kumi to NPP: Empower TESCON to make it more attractive

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (27 June), Kumi said individuals in the party could adopt the various branches of TESCON to finance their activities

Bright Essilfie Kumi, a national organiser aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the students’ wing of the party – the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) – must be financially empowered to make it more attractive to the youth.

He said the move will help strengthen the party’s support base ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (27 June), Kumi said individuals in the party could adopt the various branches of TESCON to finance their activities.

“They are students and TESCON cannot run on campus on empty stomachs. First of all, a lecturer who is an NDC man is already intimidating them by their marks, simply because they are students of other political affiliation.

“I want TESCON to also have some kind of funding, that they will use to run TESCON on campus. That actually builds upon their happiness making TESCON attractive for other students to join,” Kumi said.

“Now we are going to let one businessman and one politician also support and mentor them in order for them to come out refined as the party requires,” he said.

Kumi said if he wins he will introduce a project called “One TESCON, One Uber” to generate income for the various wings.

Stop criticising the government

Meanwhile, the national coordinator of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), Samuel Baidoo-Annobil, has advised members to refrain from denigrating the party in public.

Speaking at the Oti regional TESCON conference dubbed: “Breaking the Eight, The Role of TESCON”, he bemoaned how members of TESCON are bashing the government on social media over the E-Levy.

“We want to break the eight and I will say, we must continue to be in government but we can never achieve this with this attitude of joining members of NDC on their propaganda to speak ill against the good things of President Akufo-Addo. I challenge you all to stop this attitude if we want to break the eight,” Baidoo said.

He cited Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister and the Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye among others as those who have been rewarded for their selfless devotion to the party.

“This is a clear indication that, those who serve the party faithfully with great and positive mind to support the party as TESCON members will not be forgotten,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Oti TESCON secretariat has appealed to the national executives and the government to provide them with logistics such as computers, printers and vehicle to work effectively.
