NDC internal rift disrupts school feeding programme

The conflict, which has sparked unrest in communities including Bomaa, Yamfo Boukrukruwa, and Bredi, revolves around allegations of bias and favouritism in the selection of caterers for the programme

Tensions are mounting within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tano North constituency of the Ahafo Region, following a dispute over the management of the School Feeding Programme.

The conflict, which has sparked unrest in communities including Bomaa, Yamfo Boukrukruwa, and Bredi, revolves around allegations of bias and favouritism in the selection of caterers for the programme.

At the heart of the matter is an apparent power struggle between two opposing camps—one reportedly aligned with the Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pius Sampson Opoku, and the other with the NDC Constituency Chairman, Lord Kwaku Agamah.

Tensions escalated after a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing individuals believed to be loyal to the Constituency Chairman vandalising food prepared under the programme. In the video, the group is seen pouring cooked rice meant for pupils at the Bomaa S.D.A. Basic Primary School onto the ground. Some children were heartbreakingly seen picking the spilled food to eat—highlighting the critical role the programme plays in their nutrition and learning.

Each faction is accused of manipulating the catering contract process for political or personal gain, deepening internal divisions and creating widespread confusion in the constituency.

In response, MCE Pius Sampson Opoku issued a press statement asserting that the caterers involved were legitimately appointed, with proper vetting, and had been given appointment and introductory letters by both the Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the School Feeding Programme and the Tano North Municipal Assembly.

“Anyone who undertakes catering services without authorisation or disrupts food preparation at school premises does so at their own risk,” the MCE stated, adding that legal action will be pursued against perpetrators.

To ensure the safety of pupils and de-escalate the growing tension, the MCE has ordered a temporary suspension of all school feeding activities in the municipality until Monday, 23 June 2025, to allow for resolution of the impasse.

The situation has triggered deep concern among community members and school authorities, who fear the ongoing political infighting is endangering the daily meals of schoolchildren and undermining the broader objectives of the School Feeding Programme.

With pressure mounting, stakeholders are urging the regional leadership of the NDC to urgently intervene and help resolve the conflict before it inflicts further harm on the party and the welfare of schoolchildren.
