National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of exploiting last week’s deadly military helicopter crash for political ends, following the arrest of two individuals over alleged comments about President John Mahama.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (13 August), Nana B condemned what he called “political harassment” during a period of national mourning.
He cited the dramatic arrest of a journalist from Wontumi TV, reportedly by masked, armed men firing warning shots, and the detention of another NPP activist.
“We are supposed to be united behind the President, giving our departed brothers a fitting farewell. Instead, some government institutions are dragging this tragedy into partisan controversy,” he said.
Nana B alleged that government critics are being targeted while incendiary remarks by NDC affiliates go unpunished, recalling previous public statements wishing death on NPP leaders.
He stressed that while he does not condone reckless comments, “the manner and mood” of the arrests were unacceptable.
“Even in the military era, security forces produced warrants before searches. Are we under a military regime now?” he asked.
He urged state agencies to adopt civility, invite suspects quietly, and avoid deepening political divisions in this period of grief.
