Recent intermittent power outages due to “minor technical” challenge, says PURC

The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has attributed the recent intermittent power outages in parts of the country during peak hours to a “minor technical” challenge being faced by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to the PURC, the development is mainly a result of an increase in demand for electricity due to the dry season, especially during peak hours.
There has been public outcry on the recent intermittent power outages in parts of the country describing the situation as unbearable.
However, speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (29 February), the director of research and public affairs of PURC Dr Eric Obutey assured that ECG is working to address the problem.
“From our monitoring exercises and engagement with the utility service providers, we got the understanding that there is a minor technical challenge, the technical challenge being that we are in the dry season and in the dry season there’s a lot of load because most people are using air conditioners, the load has actually increased,” he said.
“But the transformers that we have and the equipment that we have are not able to pick up all the load at a goal, so when it happens around the peak hours, the machines are not able to pick up the loads at a goal. So some of the load have to be dumped if not there will be a system collapse.”
Obutey added, “But the authorities are working on this to ensure that they are able to pick up all the load … so that is how come we have load-shedding at that particular time … but it is not an issue that cannot be surmounted.”
