NCCE engages stakeholders on Sexual Reproductive Health in West Mamprusi

The West Mamprusi Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged stakeholders in the municipality on issues related to sexual reproductive health and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

The NCCE collaborated with Canada affairs and the UNFPA in Ghana to organize this training.

The programme, held at the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly Hall on Thursday (4 November 2025), aimed to equip stakeholders with the knowledge to educate community members on protecting girls and women.

Participants included representatives from DOVVSU, health professionals, social welfare officers, assembly members, chiefs, dressmakers, hairdressers, makeup artists, and beauticians, among others.

Health professionals from the Ghana Health Service who participated in the programme asserted that the national target for adolescent pregnancy was 12 percent, but in 2023, the West Mamprusi Municipality exceeded the target with 16 percent, 16.9 percent in 2024, and 16 percent just mid-year of 2025.

A public health nurse, Haruna Anandam Mohammed, said the cases are alarming and scary because by the end of 2025, the figure will be too much.

“In fact, the issue of adolescent pregnancy or teenage pregnancy is a problem that all of us are faced with,” Haruna said.

In his keynote address, Thomas Issahaku Imoro, Director of the West Mamprusi Municipal NCCE, highlighted the vulnerability of adolescents due to limited access to information.

“Adolescents’ reproductive health and gender-based violence remain a very serious concern for every Ghanaian, unless you don’t live in Ghana, because adolescents are very vulnerable and they are vulnerable because they lack access to accurate information,” he said.

He emphasized that the NCCE cannot combat Sexual Reproductive Health issues and SGBV alone, stressing the need for collective action among stakeholders.

Thomas added that 15-19-year-old girls have been pregnant before, saying that it is quite challenging and disturbing because it ends their education and will put a burden on their parents.

“Social norms from our communities are seriously affecting the wellbeing of these adolescent girls. 15-19-year-olds have been pregnant before, and that is quite challenging. It is challenging because these are people who are supposed to be in school or are supposed to be learning a trade but have found themselves becoming mothers. It imposes a burden on the family, the community, and Ghana at large,” he stressed.

“It is for this reason and many others that the NCCE has brought you together so that we can find a way of, if not eliminating this canker, but we should be reducing some of the challenges,” he said.

Thomas said the NCCE will extend its sensitization to radio stations, community durbars, and other social gatherings to combat the issue of sexual reproductive health and gender-based violence in the West Mamprusi Municipality.
