Women in TVET business competition launched

The competition has been set up to empower women in trades requiring technical and vocational education and training (TVET)

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) has launched the “Women in TVET Business Competition”, aimed at providing technical and financial assistance to female graduate trainees who want to scale up their business in male-dominated trades.

The World University Service of Canada (WUSC) says it launched the Women in TVET Business Competition in partnership with NEIP because it recognises that entrepreneurship in the TVET (technical and vocational education and training) sector encourages women to pursue a variety of opportunities and is therefore has a greater impact on gender parity in business.

Technical and financial support

The director of business support and policy at NEIP, Franklin Owusu-Karikari, said at the end of the competition the organisers hope to see more women making it in the sector.

“We have a desire to see women excel in their field of operation. That’s why we joyfully partnered with WUSC to be able to build this project. The Women in TVET Business Competition provides technical and financial support to women graduate trainees and start-up businesses,” Owusu-Karikari said.

He explained that participants should be women who have gone through COTVET (the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training) or the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) and have either started or are yet to start a business.

Participants will also have the opportunity to improve their business acumen and enterprises in an enabling environment, as well as gain exposure to the significant private sector and industry players in TVET by using business development services.

In addition, the winners will receive funding to recapitalise their business.

The competition is open to women between the ages of 18 and 35, although those aged up to 40 will also be considered.
