University senior staff still on strike despite 15% COLA

According to the group the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, are yet to address other concerns they have raised over the years

Members of the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) say their strike is still in full force despite the government’s 15% Cost of Living Allowance(COLA) offer to organized labour.

According to the group, the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, are yet to address other concerns they have raised over the years.

Speaking with Asaase News, the leader of the KNUST Chapter of the Senior Staff Association, George Ansong said the Association will ensure that its members stay off work until their demands are met.

“It is not only because of COLA that we embarked on the strike. We have other issues that we are talking about; the issues are basically three, and they are all based on our negotiation with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.”

They want the interest on their Tier 2 pension contributions increased and the COLA normalised. The workers have described the posture of the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission as bad faith.

“One is our Tier 2 interest, last year if you remember we embarked on a series of strikes demanding our money from the government. The government paid the principal amount, and it was left with the accrued interest.”

“Government promised to pay within the shortest possible time, since November until now, the government has not fulfilled its promise and try as much as we have tried to get the government to pay it has proved futile,” Ansong added.
