Nationwide strike looms as GNAT fights delay in teacher promotions
The looming strike is expected to severely disrupt teaching and learning at the basic level, with parents and school administrators already bracing for the impact

Basic schools face shutdown across the country as the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) announces a nationwide strike set to begin on Wednesday (30 April).
The industrial action, according to GNAT, is in response to the prolonged delay in promoting over a thousand teachers—an issue the association says has remained unresolved despite several engagements with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Public Services Commission.
Speaking to the media, GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, said the strike is a last resort following months of inaction.
“We are saying that there is fire on the mountain; at this particular time the teachers of this country are not happy; the lower ranks since 2019 have not been promoted. When we went to the Public Services Commission, we were told only two regions had been done. When will the rest be done?” he quizzed.
Mr. Musah lamented that, “The scheme of service is also pending, and upgrading is also pending. Why must it always be like that? We are talking about a reset here, and we are going to help in the reset, and we are saying this should not happen again.”
He explained that the association had earlier raised red flags over the Public Services Commission’s failure to act on the backlog of teacher promotions, a situation that has left many demoralised and frustrated.
The looming strike is expected to severely disrupt teaching and learning at the basic level, with parents and school administrators already bracing for the impact.
