Nationwide memorial service planned in Ghana for late Pope Francis, Catholic Bishops say

Catholic schools, seminaries, and institutions have also been urged to conduct prayer services and host discussions to help the faithful—especially the youth—reflect on the teachings and witness of Pope Francis

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has announced plans for a series of nationwide memorial services to honour the life and legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully on 21 April.

In a solemn statement issued by the President of the Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Bishops urged all Catholics in Ghana to join in prayer and reflection following the death of the Pontiff, who served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church since 2013.

“Pope Francis served the Church with profound humility, unwavering faith, and a tireless commitment to the poor, to peace, and to the care of the environment, our common home,” the statement said.

The GCBC revealed that a National Memorial Mass will be held at a later date, with bishops, priests, religious communities, and lay faithful expected to attend. In addition, all archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes have been encouraged to organise local Requiem Masses and Holy Hours, allowing communities across the country to mourn and celebrate the Pope’s life.

Catholic schools, seminaries, and institutions have also been urged to conduct prayer services and host discussions to help the faithful—especially the youth—reflect on the teachings and witness of Pope Francis.

His Holiness was particularly known for championing social justice, environmental stewardship, and inclusiveness within the Church. His death has drawn tributes from religious and political leaders worldwide.

“As we mourn our beloved Holy Father and prepare our hearts for the election of his successor, we pray that the Lord will welcome him into His eternal kingdom,” the GCBC President added.

Pope Francis’ death marks the end of a papacy defined by compassion, simplicity, and global engagement, especially with communities in the developing world.
