National Security summons editor of “Current Issues” newspaper over “leaked” ECG document

Prosper Agbenyagah, editor, Current Issues newspaper/National Security

The editor of the Current Issues newspaper, Prosper Agbenyegah, has been invited by Ghana’s National Security to clarify how he obtained and published a classified document allegedly linked to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), sparking renewed debate over press freedom in the country.

According to information obtained by Asaase News, the invitation was extended by Mr Richard Jakpa, Director of Operations at the National Security Secretariat. The leaked document is said to contain sensitive information related to procurement irregularities involving ECG containers.

Sources indicate that Agbenyegah honoured the invitation and appeared at the National Security premises on Monday for questioning. The session reportedly lasted for about three hours.

In a statement issued shortly after the meeting, the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) confirmed that Mr Agbenyegah had returned from the engagement in good health and had not been arrested or charged.

“The engagement was cordial and professional,” the PRINPAG Secretariat noted in a communique to members, adding that no bail conditions had been imposed.

The discussion, according to PRINPAG, focused on Mr Agbenyegah’s recent publication that referenced classified material.

National Security is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. The Electricity Company of Ghana has also not responded publicly to questions surrounding the alleged procurement concerns referenced in the leaked document.
