The National House of Chiefs has described the death of His Royal Majesty Ya-Naa Mahama Abukari II as a “monumental loss” to the Dagbon Kingdom, the institution of chieftaincy and to Ghana as a whole.
In a condolence message dated 15 July and addressed to Naa Yab Kuya-Naa Adam II, Head of Kingmakers and Paramount Chiefs of Kuya, the House said it received the news of the Overlord’s passing “with profound sorrow.”
“On behalf of the National House of Chiefs and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to Your Royal Highness, the Kingmakers, the Dagbon Traditional Council, the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, the Royal Family, the Chiefs and Elders, and the entire people of the Dagbon Kingdom during this period of immense grief,” the statement said.
Signed by Stephen Owusu, Public Relations Officer for the President of the National House of Chiefs, the message paid tribute to the late Ya-Naa’s reign.
“The passing of His Royal Majesty is a monumental loss, not only to the people of Dagbon but also to the institution of chieftaincy and the nation as a whole.
His reign will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to peace, reconciliation, unity, and the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the Dagbon Kingdom,” it stated.
The House noted that through “wise and exemplary leadership,” the late King strengthened the bonds of unity within Dagbon and “contributed significantly to the advancement of traditional governance and national development.”
It also acknowledged the role of the Kingmakers in the transition period, saying: “As Head of the Kingmakers, Your Royal Highness bears the solemn responsibility of guiding the Kingdom through this period of transition.”
The National House of Chiefs prayed that “the Almighty Allah grants eternal rest to the soul of His Royal Majesty Ya Na Abukari II, comforts all who mourn him, and grants peace, unity, and strength to the Kingdom as it prepares for the next chapter in its proud history.”
Ya-Naa Mahama Abukari II was enstooled as King and Overlord of Dagbon in January 2019 following the resolution of the long-standing Dagbon chieftaincy crisis.
