My record label rejected my hit song ‘Ojorley’, says Cina Soul

The award-winning artiste says her song 'Ojorley' became a major hit despite being rejected by her record label

The sensational highlife and Afropop singer, Christie Quincyna Quarcoopome, better known on stage as Cina Soul, has said she released her hit song Ojorley without the blessings of her then record label, Universal Music.

Speaking on Asaase 99.5 Accra‘s Between Hours Show with Naa Ashorkor on Monday (31 October), she said, “sometimes, some labels just preach a lot before they sign you, but you get in there and you don’t see anything.”

“I remember when I actually was with Universal when I recorded Ojorley, they didn’t want the song. And that’s my biggest song too. That’s how funny it was.

“I actually got signed to Universal Music record label and I’m independent again. I have been independent for a longer time,” Cina Soul added.

Being independent

According to her, “it’s harder to be an independent artiste. That’s a fact because you are not only being an artiste but you are multitasking. But when you are with a label, you have a larger team working for you.”

“They (Universal Music) felt like it [Ojorley] wouldn’t cross borders. Business-wise, in their minds it didn’t make sense. So, I did a stubborn thing where I dropped it without them, without their knowledge. Just put it out myself.

“Even though I was still with them, I shot the video myself and that song became my biggest song till date. And when I won awards and stuffs, they sort of regretted it. And they were like ‘you know what, let’s give her a chance,’ so it kind of woke them up.”

“Although it was a breach of contract when I released it without my label, when the song did well they forgave me. I won award for the video and audio as well,” Cina Soul said.
