Nana Yaa Mensah: Strait of Hormuz tensions could spark global trade shock
Nana Yaa Mensah noted that China, which relies heavily on Iranian oil for industrial production, would be one of the hardest hit if the Strait is blocked or destabilised

International correspondent Nana Yaa Mensah says the US strikes on Iran are already reshaping global economic anxieties, particularly over disruptions to crude oil supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (23 June), Nana Yaa warned that any interruption to the strategic shipping lane—through which over 20% of the world’s crude oil and a large percentage of liquefied natural gas exports pass—could cause massive ripple effects.
“It’s not just about geopolitics. This has serious economic consequences,” she said.
She noted that China, which relies heavily on Iranian oil for industrial production, would be one of the hardest hit if the Strait is blocked or destabilised.
“At one point, China was importing up to 1.8 million barrels of oil a day from Iran—nearly 50% of its daily needs. If that flow is disrupted, the global energy market could be thrown into chaos.”
Nana Yaa added that the Western response has been one of caution and calculated ambiguity. “They’re calling for de-escalation without being openly critical of the US strikes. It’s a diplomatic balancing act,” she said.
She also flagged the potential involvement of other actors, including Pakistan and India, who rely on Iranian energy exports but have remained largely silent.
“Their silence doesn’t mean they’re indifferent. Their interests are very much at stake,” she concluded.
