A seven-month-old baby has been critically injured when a heavy truck crashed into a chain of shops at Anloga Junction in Kumasi on Thursday.
Two others, including the driver of the truck are also receiving treatment at a hospital nearby.
Eyewitnesses account indicate that the incident occurred when a long truck carrying goods, lost control of its brakes, allegedly, after being pursued by security operatives from the Accra Highway.
“The vehicle was stopped with an object, but after the traffic light turned green, the driver started to move the car uncontrollably,” an eyewitness said.
“We heard a loud noise and ran for safety. We were not harmed except for a seven-month-old baby who was found under the rubble. All containers, and glass showcases have been reduced to nothing,” another said.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene following a distress call.
Concerns have been raised over the spate of road crashes in the Ashanti regional capital.
The number of reported road traffic crashes in Kumasi rose from 1,255 in 2021 to 1,550 in 2022, representing a 24% increase.
The police and fire service are investigating the cause of the crash.
