Nana Akomea: Bawumia, Party leaders acknowledge mistakes, call for forgiveness on unity tour

Nana Akomea explained that the ongoing national tour led by Bawumia is focused on unity, reconciliation, and acknowledgement of the grievances raised by party members

Former Deputy Chairman of Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Nana Akomea, has refuted claims that the Vice President and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders are distancing themselves from the causes of the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (28 April), Nana Akomea explained that the ongoing national tour led by Bawumia is focused on unity, reconciliation, and acknowledgement of the grievances raised by party members — not on shifting blame.

According to Akomea, during each meeting with party delegates, there is a consistent message from the four main speakers: Kennedy Agyapong, Justin Frimpong-Kodua, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, and Mahamudu Bawumia.

Each of them thanks the delegates for their loyalty, acknowledges the frustrations that emerged in the Oquaye Committee’s report, apologises for past shortcomings, and appeals for unity as the party moves forward.

“All four speakers — Kennedy Agyapong, the General Secretary, the Chairman, and Bawumia — address the same themes. They acknowledge the complaints, ask for forgiveness, and plead for unity,” Akomea stressed. “It is wrong for anyone to suggest that Bawumia is excusing himself from responsibility.”

Bawumia’s stance on e-levy

Akomea also emphasised that Bawumia’s position on controversial policies like the E-Levy has been consistent.

He noted that even before the levy was introduced, Bawumia publicly opposed taxing digital payments and pledged to repeal the levy if elected.

Oquaye Report meant for internal use

Touching on concerns that the findings of the Oquaye report have not been publicly released, Akomea clarified that such post-election studies are traditionally for internal party use and discussed through party structures. He cited similar practices after past elections by both the NPP and the NDC.

Regarding suggestions that polling station executives should have been included in the meetings, Akomea said logistical constraints limited attendance, but constituency and regional executives have been tasked to convey the discussions to the grassroots.

Nana Akomea concluded by describing the unity tour as a resounding success, noting the overwhelming enthusiasm and gratitude expressed by party supporters on the ground.
