Assembly members in the Nadowli and Kaleo District have rejected the President’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE), Mary Haruna, following a crucial confirmation vote held on Tuesday.
Mary Haruna, who serves as the Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the district, polled 24 votes in favour and 28 against—failing to meet the required two-thirds majority for confirmation.
Her rejection marks the second of such incident in the Upper West Region during the current round of DCE confirmations. On 17 April, Shaibu Adamu, nominee for the Wa East District, also failed to secure the necessary support.
The outcome leaves Nadowli/Kaleo without a substantive DCE, pending further direction from the Presidency. As per procedure, the president may choose to renominate the same individual or propose a new candidate for consideration.
Despite these setbacks, the confirmation process across the region has recorded general success. Nine out of the eleven municipal and district assemblies in the Upper West Region have so far approved their respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees.
Residents of Nadowli and Kaleo and Wa East must now await fresh directives from the Presidency as local government leadership in the two districts remains in limbo.
