NADMO to intervene after President Mahama’s directive on Adum fire

President John Mahama has ordered the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide immediate relief to traders whose businesses were destroyed in the devastating fire that swept through the Adum Blue Light area in Kumasi on Friday (21 March).

The fire, which broke out in one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial hubs, reduced several shops and properties to ashes, leaving many traders counting their losses. Emergency responders worked for hours to bring the blaze under control, but the destruction was extensive.

Expressing his sympathy for the affected traders and their families, President Mahama emphasized the need for swift intervention.

“I came to the Ashanti Region this morning for the ‘Tree for Life’ initiative, and the regional minister informed me of what happened. This is sad and unfortunate because if you see the shops that have been engulfed, it’s devastating,” he stated.

The President also called for better planning of market spaces to prevent future disasters and condemned the use of gas cylinders in marketplaces, which he believes contribute to recurring fire outbreaks.

“We have to carefully look at our market structures. The sounds we hear are all gas cylinders. We shouldn’t be cooking at the market,” he cautioned.

Traders affected by the fire are hopeful that NADMO’s intervention will provide much-needed relief as they struggle to recover from their losses.
