MTN Ghana Foundation cuts sod for ultra-modern student resource centre at UDS

The MTN Ghana Foundation has officially cut sod for the construction of a state-of-the-art Student Resource Centre at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Dungu Campus.

The facility, estimated at GH₵9.7 million, is expected to be completed within a year. When completed, the centre will serve as a hub for digital literacy, STEM education, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) training, not only for UDS students but also for learners across the northern region.

It will feature an integrated ICT and digital skills hub, equipped with world-class technology and modern training facilities in AI, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

A level 500 medical student, Samuel A. Issifu, expressed gratitude to MTN for the initiative, describing it as a major relief to students.

“The absence of a student resource centre on campus has been a concern for many of us. This facility will provide a central space for research, internet access, and other academic needs. We thank MTN for investing in our future,” he said.

Senior Manager at MTN Ghana, Robert Kuzoe, explained that the project is part of MTN’s broader vision of empowering Ghana’s youth with digital skills for the future of work. He noted that while Ghana has made strides in digital education, youth unemployment remains a critical issue. “In 2023, unemployment among those aged 15–24 was 23 percent.

That is why interventions like this are necessary to ensure our young people are not just consumers but also creators and leaders in the digital economy,” he stressed.

Professor Muniru Alhassan, Dean at the UDS Nyankpala Campus, described the centre as a one-stop hub for nurturing both technical and social intelligence. “The world of work is changing rapidly, and this facility provides our students with the competitive edge needed to blend theory with practice and meet job market demands,” he said.

MTN’s Broader Digital Intervention

The UDS project adds to MTN’s growing investment in digital education nationwide. The telecom giant has already constructed a 100-seater ICT and Robotics Laboratory at Mamfe Methodist Girls School in the Eastern Region, an ICT laboratory at Yilo Krobo Senior High School, and a modern ICT hub in Dansoman, Greater Accra. These interventions form part of MTN’s commitment to positioning Ghanaian youth for success in the digital space.
