MTN Foundation’s anti-GBV campaign reaches New Asafo Basic and JHS

The MTN Ghana Foundation has marked its observance of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by engaging pupils at the New Asafo Basic and Junior High School in Asokwa, Kumasi.

The global campaign, which runs from 25 November to 10 December, aims to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls worldwide.

MTN’s initiative focuses on sensitizing schoolchildren on the consequences of gender-based violence, including online abuse targeting young females.

George Kyei Frimpong, Education Portfolio Advisor for the MTN Foundation, said the campaign, launched in November 2024, aims to reach communities and schools to raise awareness about the consequences of gender-based violence.

“MTN abhors any form of violence, especially gender-based violence. The sensitization is essentially for people to desist from it,” he said.

Frimpong emphasized the importance of creating a respectful and supportive school environment. He urged pupils, particularly boys, to treat female classmates with dignity and to reject discrimination or marginalization.

He also highlighted the increasing problem of cyberbullying, noting that online abuse disproportionately targets girls and can spill over to affect behavior and emotional well-being in real life.

Debate

As part of the engagement, students participated in a debate on the motion: “Teaching boys and girls the same content will prevent violence.”

The girls’ team, arguing that educational equality fosters mutual respect and discipline, won the competition with 842 points against the boys’ 820.

In addition to recognizing debate participants with branded rewards, MTN donated tablets and other equipment to the school’s computer lab to support ICT learning.

Frimpong noted that the campaign targets basic-level pupils to help them grow with a clear understanding that gender-based violence should not be tolerated. Similar initiatives have been carried out in other regions of Ghana.
