MTN denies MoMo breach after woman loses GHC 11,000 to alleged fraud
In an official statement issued on Tuesday (15 April), the company clarified that its investigations found no internal breach, attributing the incident instead to social engineering tactics used by fraudsters

MobileMoney LTD, the operator of MTN MoMo, has responded to a viral social media post in which a customer accused the company of compromising her mobile wallet, resulting in unauthorised withdrawals.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday (15 April), the company clarified that its investigations found no internal breach, attributing the incident instead to social engineering tactics used by fraudsters.
The widely circulated post, which alleged that MobileMoney LTD had failed to secure user accounts, drew significant public attention and concern. In response, MoMo assured customers that it remains committed to the safety and security of their financial transactions.
According to the company, the incident in question involved the customer unknowingly sharing sensitive information with fraudsters. “Our findings suggest that this was a case of social engineering, where a person unknowingly shares sensitive information—such as a One-Time Password (OTP), verification link, or PIN—with fraudsters,” the statement read.
MTN MoMo emphasised the importance of digital safety and reiterated a standing advisory to all users: “Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone—not even someone claiming to be from MTN.”
The mobile money provider concluded by reaffirming its dedication to customer protection, stating, “We remain committed to keeping your transactions safe, convenient, and secure.”
This incident adds to growing concerns about digital fraud in Ghana, especially in the mobile money sector, which has become a vital component of financial inclusion for millions. Cybersecurity experts continue to warn users against falling prey to phishing and scam techniques that exploit user trust and urgency.
MoMo users are advised to report suspicious activities promptly and to verify any unsolicited communication purportedly from the company before taking action.
