The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed six new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of recorded infections in the country to 85.
The latest figures were announced in a public health update posted on the GHS’s official Facebook page on Wednesday.
The update follows a recent spike in Mpox infections, with 34 cases reported earlier in the week across 10 regions. Health authorities say the surge has prompted a scale-up in surveillance and contact tracing efforts in affected areas.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that causes symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, muscle pain, and swollen lymph nodes. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected persons or contaminated objects such as clothing and bedding.
In its latest advisory, the GHS urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any symptoms immediately to the nearest health facility.
“Early detection and treatment are essential to curbing the spread of Mpox,” the Service noted. “We encourage all Ghanaians, especially those in affected communities, to be alert and practise good hygiene, including regular handwashing.”
Health officials added that patients currently showing active symptoms are being monitored and isolated to prevent further transmission. The GHS also stressed the importance of avoiding close contact with individuals who display signs of the disease.
Despite the rise in case numbers, the Ghana Health Service assured the public that the situation remains under control and that all necessary containment measures are being enforced.
“The public is advised to cooperate with health officials and avoid panic,” the statement concluded. “Preventing further spread of the virus is a collective responsibility.”
