MP petitions police over Kumawu commander’s “unruly conduct”

The MP, Philip Basoah, feels hard done by during the confirmation exercise for the President’s nominee for Sekyere Kumawu DCE seat

The MP for Kumawu, Philip Basoah, wants the Kumawu Divisional Police Commander, ACP Philip Ivor Asante, to be probed over what he terms as “unruly conduct” during the confirmation exercise for the President’s nominee for Sekyere Kumawu district chief executive seat.

In a viral video, Basoah was spotted in what appears to be a heated verbal exchange with armed police men, deployed to the Church of Pentecost premises where the third confirmation exercise for Samuel Addae Agyekum, was ongoing.

In a petition sighted by Asaase News and addressed to the regional police commander, the lawmaker said he and about 10 other assembly members who had the mandate to participate in the confirmation exercise were also prevented by police personnel from entering the premises.

According to him, efforts to get the divisional police chief to address the “unfortunate incident” were unattended to as “he (ACP Asante) snubbed me and left me to the heartless officers who among others, told me ‘I do not vote so I have no right to enter’.”

Basoah explained that although he showed his identification card to the police officers who might have been oblivious of who he is, “the Divisional commander Asante deliberately left me to these ‘boys’ to be heckled and disgraced as a Member of Parliament”.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service ASP Godwin Ahianyo confirming receipt of the petition said investigations into the matter will begin soon.

“I spoke to the regional police commander this morning and he confirmed that the MP for Kumawu has presented a petition to the command so he has also referred it to the regional crime officer for investigation,” he said.

“We have our own internal disciplinary actions, and so if anyone is found culpable, the police administration will not hesitate to punish that fellow,” ASP Ahianyo added.
