The Movement for Change (MFC) has declared its support for the constitutional procedures surrounding the recent suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, reaffirming its commitment to justice, fairness, and democratic values.
In a statement released on Tuesday (April 29), the group stated the importance of following Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for removing a Chief Justice.
MFC commended the President’s action, which followed advice from the Council of State and a prima facie determination by a designated committee.
The group also acknowledged the President’s decision to form a five-member committee to investigate the petition against the Chief Justice, noting it as a constitutionally grounded move.
MFC urged the committee members to act with impartiality and integrity in their deliberations to preserve trust in Ghana’s institutions. It also advised political parties, particularly the NPP and NDC, to avoid politicising the process and allow justice to prevail.
While expressing confidence in the process, MFC recommended future reforms to make the removal process of top judicial officials more transparent. They suggested including such reforms in the mandate of the Constitutional Review Committee.
The group further expressed shock at the Ghana Bar Association’s request for the president to reverse the suspension of the Chief Justice.
