Motorcycle crash on UCC campus leaves Level 200 student dead

Main entry gate to University of Cape Coast (UCC)

A Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast has died following a road accident on campus, the university said.

The student, identified as Kweku Mensah, was pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) programme at the university.

In a statement, the university said the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday when Mensah was riding a motorcycle on campus.

Preliminary information indicates he was heading to Oguaa Hall to retrieve his identification card ahead of a scheduled examination when the motorcycle collided with an Ayalolo bus along the road between the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre.

The student sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the University of Cape Coast Hospital for treatment.

However, he was pronounced dead shortly after efforts by medical staff to resuscitate him failed, the university said.

The incident has been reported to the Ghana Police Service, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department opening an investigation into the crash.

The body has been deposited at the university morgue pending further procedures, while the family of the deceased has been informed.

Management of the University of Cape Coast expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the university community to remain calm as investigations continue.
