Mothering is far more rewarding than most tasks, says Elizabeth Ohene

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (10 May) Ohene said mothering is difficult but comes with much joy

The respected Ghanaian stateswoman and international journalist Elizabeth Ohene has described mothering as far more rewarding than most task.

Her comment comes as Ghana joins the rest of the globe to celebrate Mother’s Day today.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (10 May ahead of this years Mother’s Day, Ohene said mothering is difficult but comes with much joy.

“…I used to have a friend who was a nurse (belated), she told me that she thinks the most rewarding of nursing is when you are in the nursing block, just seeing a child very sick today and tomorrow seeing that same child with a smile and getting better is just so much easier and rewarding than in the adult wards.”

“Mothering might be difficult but it is far more rewarding than many of the other tasks that we get up to. So don’t allow us (mothers) complain about how difficult it is because the reward far outweighs what we have to put in,” Ohene said.

About Mothers Day

The Mother’s Day concept originated in the United States in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

This followed years of painstaking activism by Anna Jarvis through letters to newspapers and politicians, and pushing for the adoption of Mother’s Day as an official holiday.
Jarvis, who had no children of her own, conceived of Mother’s Day as an occasion to honour the sacrifices individual mothers make for their children.
