GEM advocates for total removal of taxes on sanitary pads

The founder of Girls Excellence Movement (GEM), Juliana Ama Kplorfia, wants the government to completely scrap taxes on sanitary pads in Ghana.
The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta last week announced tax waivers to boost the production of sanitary pads locally.
Presenting the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on Wednesday (15 November), the minister said
sanitary pad manufacturers in the country will not have to pay import duty for raw materials next year.
In addition, the minister said VAT will not be charged on sanitary pads produced locally.
Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (20 November), kplorfia said: “We were expecting a total removal of tax on sanitary pads.”
“So, on the basic condom until you wanted some extra, you paid more for it,” she added. “So, we expected the same principle to be used in the sanitary pad issue, so that there is a total removal of taxes on sanitary pad across board both local and imported.”

“We have to give parameters and guidelines and conditions for importers to meet before in order to be allowed to import certain kinds of sanitary pads into the system,” Kplorfia said.
“Just like we do with all other products that Ghana imports, we can put measures in place to control who qualifies to bring what to Ghana at what time, it can be done,” she added.
