A survey of market prices of certain selected commodities has shown that cooking tomatoes recorded the highest price increase in May 2020.

The average price of a 72-kilogram crate of cooking tomatoes went up by almost 13% from GHC826 the previous month to GHC933.

According to the market research firm Esoko, the price of millet recorded a drop for the period.

The survey assessed 12 food items, including tubers, grains and vegetables, at seven markets from across the country.

For May this year, a 72-kilogram parcel of tomatoes sold highest at GHC1,600 at Dambai, while the lowest price the commodity fetched was GHC420 in Tamale.

This was followed by fresh cassava, which recorded an average market price of GHC139.83, up from the previous GHC124.33.

The percentage increase in price was 12.47%. Accra recorded the highest price (GHC160) while Kumasi recorded the lowest (GHC90).

Again, groundnuts, gari and the pona variety of yam recorded price increases ranging between 2.91 and 2.74%.

Meanwhile, the price of a 50-kilogram bag of imported rice recorded an increase of 0.44, while the 100-kilogram bag of local white rice dropped in price.

The price declined from GHC346 to GHC344.

In all, three food items recorded a drop in price between April and May. These were local rice, millet and white cowpeas.
