MMDCE list: Police pick up four protesters in Odododiodoo

The suspects led some aggrieved persons to block roads and burned car tyres at Jamestown over reported removal of the Accra Mayor

The police have arrested at least four ringleaders in Saturday’s protest against the purported removal of Mohammed Adjei Sowah as mayor of Accra, an official statement said.

They are Salaami Abubakar, 36; Daniel Opare Oman, 43; Edward Holm, 38, and Daniel Clottey, 41. The suspects led some aggrieved persons to block roads and burned car tyres at Jamestown, causing ā€œa sense of fear and disorder,ā€ the police statement said.

Some of the youth in Odododiodoo,Ā one ofĀ the three constituencies within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) area of Greater Accra, demonstrated on Saturday, threatening to vote against the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) if Sowah is not reappointed to serve as AMA chief executive.

Reliable sources in the government tellĀ Asaase NewsĀ thatĀ SowahĀ will be replaced byĀ Elizabeth Sackey, a former deputy regional minister for Greater Accra.

ā€œThe police administration strongly cautions any individual or group of persons who intend to unlawfully assemble and cause mayhem over the publication of the prospective MMDCEs list or any other matter, to immediately abandon such plans or face the law,” the police statement cautioned.

Meanwhile, Sowah, the Mayor of Accra, has condemned the protest against his reported removal from office.

In a statement, the mayor said: ā€œI unequivocally denounce any form of disturbances in my name. As responsible citizens, we should recognise the presidentā€™s authority to nominate individuals of his choice to promote his agenda and itā€™s our duty to support the appointees to succeed.ā€

He added: ā€œI totally support all the presidentā€™s nominations and commit to continue to work towards the development of the country. I take this opportunity to call on all well-meaning Ghanaians, especially the NPP party faithful, to support His Excellency the Presidentā€™s nominations.ā€

The much-anticipated list of President Akufo-Addoā€™s appointees for the offices ofĀ metropolitan, municipal and district chief executiveĀ (MMDCEs) will be made public on Sunday 19 September 2021 during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information,Ā Asaase RadioĀ can confirm.
