The vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie in Ghana’s Parliament descended into partisan tension on Monday, culminating in a full walkout by Minority members of the Appointments Committee.
The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, said it was boycotting the proceedings, arguing that the nomination was illegitimate due to unresolved legal challenges related to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
“We are registering that we reject the nomination, and the record should reflect that the report of the vetting be a Majority report,” Afenyo-Markin said before exiting the chamber.
The Minority cited multiple ongoing cases before the Supreme Court, High Court, and ECOWAS Court, asserting that continuing with the vetting undermines judicial independence and prejudges matters still under adjudication.
The walkout followed a tense confrontation between Minority and Majority leaders in Parliament, highlighting growing political friction over the appointment of Ghana’s highest judicial officer.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is facing scrutiny by the Appointments Committee as part of the vetting process that will determine his suitability for the office of Chief Justice.
