Minister of Energy announces retrieval of 40 missing ECG containers
Jinapor commended the efforts of the National Security Operatives and law enforcement agencies in tracking down the missing assets

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed that 40 of the over 1,300 missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers have been retrieved after they were traced to a terminal warehouse in Kpone owned by an Indian businessman.
The containers, which contained essential electrical materials, were reportedly sold to him last year.
Speaking on the Accra-based TV3, Jinapor commended the efforts of the National Security Operatives and law enforcement agencies in tracking down the missing assets.
“The briefing I got this morning, and let me commend the National Security Operatives and the law enforcement agencies; the information I got is that already they’ve traced about 40 of them to a particular terminal warehouse in Kpone which belonged to an Indian man, and they have confiscated all the 40 containers and moved them to a secured location.”
The minister disclosed that the businessman claims he legitimately acquired the containers, a matter now under investigation.
“The man indicates that those containers were sold to him last year and so that’s a matter of investigation that law enforcement agencies would ensure that the law takes its course.”
Jinapor assured the public that security forces are actively gathering intelligence on the whereabouts of the remaining containers and tracking down those responsible for their disappearance.
“There are also reports of some other areas that they are picking intelligence from; they will trace and retrieve all of them and fish out the perpetrators before the court of competent jurisdiction.”
Call for Accountability
The minister reiterated his commitment to ensuring that those behind the missing ECG containers face justice, cautioning against any attempts to politicise the prosecution process.
“Let me just say that when we start prosecuting these people, let no one say that this is witch-hunting. These are properties of the state, and we will use every legitimate means to ensure that we retrieve them.”
Financial and Operational Concerns
The retrieval of some of the missing containers comes amid broader concerns about ECG’s financial and operational inefficiencies. The company has been under scrutiny for accumulating over GHS 1.5 billion in demurrage charges and failing to clear crucial equipment from the ports. Jinapor has called for systemic reforms within ECG to prevent further losses and improve Ghana’s power supply reliability.
“If you have over 2,500 containers stuck and not utilised, it means that you are not improving the grid. You are not improving the distribution lines. And the current system is obsolete. The demand keeps increasing, and so it has a direct correlation with the delivery of power.”
With ongoing investigations and retrieval efforts, the government is expected to provide further updates on the missing ECG containers.
Authorities are also working to determine whether the disappearance was due to fraudulent clearing, mismanagement at ECG, or documentation errors. Jinapor has vowed to ensure full accountability and transparency in the process, emphasising that those responsible will be held to account.
