Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, the Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to ensure that workers’ earnings are aligned with their productivity.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Vetting Committee on Wednesday, 30 January 2025, Pelpuo outlined his vision for improving employment and productivity in Ghana.
Addressing concerns about the disparity between wages and productivity, he acknowledged the complexities involved, noting that multiple institutions and stakeholders play a role in the process.
He assured the committee of his intention to collaborate with the FWSC to find solutions that are both fair and constitutionally sound.
On gender representation in the workforce, Pelpuo stressed the importance of fostering gender balance, emphasising that equal opportunities for women would contribute significantly to economic growth.
Discussing employment challenges, he highlighted an ongoing initiative to develop a labour market information system. This system, he explained, would serve as a central database for job vacancies and job seekers, enabling better coordination between the private sector and potential employees.
Pelpuo also underscored the critical role of the private sector in job creation, calling for increased government support in the form of incentives such as easier access to credit and investment opportunities.
“We will encourage the private sector to maximise their output, and we will provide the necessary support to help them thrive,” he assured.
Touching on the government’s plan for a 24-hour economy, he reiterated its potential to enhance production and drive economic growth.
When questioned about the possibility of salary increments for public sector workers, Pelpuo acknowledged that it was a key area of concern. He assured that once he assumes office, he will engage the relevant stakeholders to address the matter.
