Police arrest over 250 motorbike riders for jumping red light

The Ghana Police Service, in April 2022, introduced “Operation PAARI,” a road safety intervention to check indiscipline among motorcycle users on our roads, which was becoming a major cause of road traffic accidents

As part of the Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline (PAARI) programme, the police have arrested over 250 motorbike riders for jumping the red light in Accra.

The Ghana Police Service, in April 2022, introduced “Operation PAARI,” a road safety intervention to check indiscipline among motorcycle users on our roads, which was becoming a major cause of road traffic accidents.

As part of the strategy, motorcycle users who were arrested in violation of road traffic regulations and other traffic offences within the period were sensitised and educated on road traffic regulations, and subsequently cautioned to be law-abiding.

Following the introduction of the initiative, it has been observed that most riders are now obeying traffic regulations. Such regulations as not jumping the red light, avoiding riding on pedestrian walkways and facing oncoming traffic were respected.

The benefit of operation PAARI is reflected in available data on road traffic accidents which shows that, for the first time in a long while, there is a significant reduction in crashes involving motorbikes.

In order to sustain the gains, the service has intensified the implementation of operation PAARI. It has deployed special teams at traffic intersections starting from Accra.

The officers, who are deployed with motorbikes, chase traffic offenders who jump the red light, confront and arrest them. This creates a sense of certainty of arrest. It commands some level of self-discipline among the riding public.

Since the beginning of March, over 250 motorbike riders have been arrested for jumping the red light at various traffic intersections in Accra. All the arrested riders will be taken through road safety education and the dangers of their conduct on themselves and other road users. They will be made to face the law afterwards.

The police commended law-abiding riders for adhering to road traffic regulations and cautioned recalcitrant riders against the blatant disregard for traffic regulations because the law will catch up with them.

The service appealed for public support to make the PAARI programme a success.
