New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser aspirant Michael Osei Boateng, popularly known as Pope, says the party must rebuild and rebrand its youth structures if it hopes to return to power in the 2028 general election.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (21 July), Boateng argued that the party’s biggest challenge ahead of the next election is reconnecting with young voters through stronger mobilisation and communication.
“The youth wing is not as strong as it used to be,” he said. “If we can win power, we have to get the youth united, the youth stronger, and poised for power.”
According to him, the NPP must move beyond national headquarters and strengthen its grassroots structures beginning at polling stations.
“The youth wing will not be a central command from the national office alone. We will go down to the polling station because elections are won at the polling station,” he said.
Boateng maintained that many young Ghanaians had drifted away from the party not because of its policies but because of poor communication.
“We have the best policies for the youth, from Free SHS to One District, One Factory, but we failed to communicate them effectively. There was a communication barrier,” he said.
He proposed rebranding the party’s tertiary students’ network, Tescon, and expanding youth engagement beyond universities to include young people in markets, farming communities and informal settlements.
“The youth of the NPP are not only those on university campuses. They are in the markets, the ghettos and the farms. We need someone who understands all these groups.”
Boateng also stressed the importance of listening to young people.
“We shouldn’t take youth mobilisation for granted. We should listen carefully to what young people are saying because their voices are their votes.”
He said technology would play a central role in reorganising the youth wing, although he declined to disclose details of his strategy, describing them as part of his campaign plans.
If elected, Boateng said his success would ultimately be measured by whether the NPP returns to power in 2028.
“If we don’t win power in 2028, then it means I have failed as National Youth Organiser.”
