Meta deepens engagement with Ghana to accelerate digital transformation

Meta deepens ties with Ghana to support digital inclusion, AI adoption, and innovation across the tech ecosystem.

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to play a greater role in Ghana’s digital future following high-level discussions between the tech giant and Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations. The talks signal a growing commitment to partner on digital transformation, with a focus on inclusivity, innovation, and capacity building.

Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President for Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkiye, paid a courtesy call on the Minister, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), in Accra on Monday. The meeting centered on ways Meta can support Ghana’s efforts to accelerate digital adoption, boost digital skills, and foster a secure and innovative online environment.

Focus Areas of the Partnership

Key themes of the discussion included:

  • Digital Inclusion: Ensuring that underserved communities — especially in rural and peri-urban areas — have access to reliable internet and affordable digital tools. Meta’s connectivity programs, including initiatives like Express Wi-Fi, could be deployed to bridge access gaps.
  • Innovation & Startups: Exploring support for Ghanaian tech entrepreneurs and startups, including mentorship, funding opportunities, and exposure to global networks.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Collaborating on responsible and ethical deployment of AI technologies to solve local challenges, improve service delivery, and enhance productivity in sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.
  • Cybersecurity & Digital Safety: Strengthening Ghana’s capacity to combat misinformation, enhance online safety, and promote responsible digital citizenship through training, tools, and awareness campaigns.
  • Youth Empowerment & Skills Development: Supporting programs to equip young Ghanaians with digital skills, coding, and other in-demand capabilities for the 21st-century job market.

Leadership Commitments

Hon. Samuel Nartey George welcomed Meta’s interest in Ghana and underscored the importance of creating a digitally inclusive economy that empowers every Ghanaian, especially the youth.

“Our focus is clear — we want to build a tech-driven economy that offers opportunities for all,” the Minister stated. “This partnership has the potential to create jobs, empower local businesses, and bring government services closer to the people.”

He also stressed the need for Meta to tailor its programs to Ghana’s unique cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic context while adopting best practices from its work across the globe.

Kojo Boakye, in response, praised Ghana’s progressive stance on digital transformation and expressed Meta’s enthusiasm for collaborating with governments that are committed to building open, safe, and inclusive digital spaces.

“Ghana is one of Africa’s most promising digital frontiers,” Boakye said. “We are excited to support its journey by working together with the government, civil society, and local innovators to ensure that technology benefits all.”

Next Steps

While no formal agreement has been signed yet, both parties expressed optimism about deepening engagement in the coming months. Technical teams are expected to begin mapping out potential initiatives and implementation timelines, particularly in areas with immediate impact such as skills development and internet connectivity.

This development adds Ghana to the growing list of African nations actively partnering with global tech leaders to unlock the full potential of the digital economy.

As Ghana charts its path toward becoming a regional innovation hub, the collaboration with Meta could prove to be a milestone in shaping a more connected, inclusive, and technologically advanced society.
