Meta announces new steps to help combat sextortion scammers

In a radical, decisive move to protect its users, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced today new measures regarding the rising threat from sextortion scams across its platforms.

The scams generally involve bad actors coercing victims into compromising images or video and then demanding money or further intimate content in order not to expose those images.

Sextortion is a cybercrime that involves deceiving people into giving explicit materials. These scamsters pose as lovers and threaten their victims that they will leak photos or videos taken privately unless their demands are met. Such schemes can cause serious emotional, psychological, and financial damage.

But with greater sophistication in recent years, in combination with the global reach of social media platforms, it is easier for criminals to target users from anywhere in the world. This has made Meta’s platforms, some of the most used around the globe, targets of choice for criminal activity.

Meta’s Multi-Pronged Approach

To that end, Meta is expanding its suite of tools and policies to prevent, detect and respond to sextortion scams, including:

1.Proactive Detection: By investing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Meta will be better at proactive detection of harmful content before it spreads. This would involve identifying the pattern events typical with sextortion behavior-such as a sudden request for intimate images or suspicious account activities. Such cases, when flagged, will be escalated for review by Meta’s content moderation teams.

2. User Reporting and Education: Meta will facilitate reporting by providing an easier avenue for the victims and other concerned users to report suspected activity. Besides this, Meta plans to develop and publish educational campaigns on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp that will help users learn to identify the signs of sextortion, avoid risky online interactions, and protect their personal information.

3. Increased Cooperation with Law Enforcement Agencies: Meta has promised to enhance its cooperation with local and international law enforcement agencies. It is therefore putting in place a system where, in the event that such incidents of sextortion are reported, law enforcement agencies can get onto the tail of the criminals and offer help to the victims.

4. Support and Recovery to Victims: Sensitive to the traumatic nature of these scams, Meta will introduce new support services for victims-from connections to mental health resources, step-by-step guides on how to regain control of compromised accounts, to privacy tools to protect users moving forward.

A Global Threat Requires a Global Response Meta’s new measures come in the wake of increasing efforts to crack down on

cybercrime across its platforms. The company has faced increased pressure in recent years, as advocates and lawmakers call on tech giants to take more responsibility for keeping users safe. In confronting the sextortion scams head-on, Meta wants to give a stern warning to the criminals that it means business and to give its users a safer online space.

Speaking to the announcement, Meta Chief of Safety, Antigone Davis said, “The safety and well-being of our users are our top priority. Sextortion is a devastating crime, and we are committed to doing everything we can to prevent it from happening on our platforms. We want people to feel secure when they use our services, and today’s steps are part of that ongoing mission.”

What’s Next

While these new measures by Meta mark an important move in the right direction, most experts believe that the battle against sextortion requires continued effort, innovation, and vigilance. It is expected that the company will invest more in technological solutions, apart from scaling up partnerships with governments and non-profits to help restrain this form of exploitation.

For now, the best defense for any user is knowledge and vigilance online. These new tools in place by Meta give users an opportunity to leverage all sorts of privacy settings, be more cautious about whom they interact with online, and report suspicious activities as soon as possible.

As Meta continues to raise the bar in the fight against sextortion scams, it reassures that it is fully committed to the protection of users in this ever-evolving digital space.
