Jantuah to NDC MPs: Resign if you want to continue solidarising with your colleagues on trial

NDC MPs on Thursday abandoned Parliament to support the MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, at his court trial, forcing the House to adjourn

Kwame Jantuah, a private legal practitioner, has urged NDC Members of Parliament to give up their seats if they really want to solidarise with two members of the Minority Caucus facing trial before the courts – Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, and James Gyakye Quayson, the MP for Assin North.

NDC MPs abandoned the House on Thursday to support the MP for Assin North at his trial, forcing the House to adjourn less than an hour after it convened.

James Gyakye Quayson is facing charges of forgery and perjury in connection with alleged offences committed in the run-up to the 2020 parliamentary election in Assin North.

He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

A statement from the Minority NDC group in Parliament said that the boycott of yesterday’s sitting was to “accompany and solidarise with two members of the caucus, namely Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader, and James Gyakye Quayson, MP for Assin North”.

NDC MPs thronged the high court in Accra on Thursday (6 July 2023)

But, speaking on Asaase 99.5 Accra‘s news analysis show The Forum on Saturday (8 July), Jantuah said: “Their constituents shouldn‘t be made to suffer. There are important businesses and grave issues that we need to deal with.”

He added: “I am not in favour. Parliament is there for the people. If you decide that you want to go and support your colleague, then resign from Parliament and go and support him, but not at the expense of the people, period.”
