Meet AJ Nelson, Ghana’s pan-Africanist rapper

The Ghanaian Afrocentric rapper, Adjei Nelson Otumfour, popularly known as AJ Nelson, has said his favourite aspect of being an artist is being able to express himself freely.

“What I like most about being a musician is speaking what’s on my mind.”

Speaking with Asaase News, the pan-Africanist rapper said, “I pay attention to my lyrics. My philosophy is that you must fall for my music and words. I always make sure that all the words in my songs are positive.”

The hitmaker of ‘Mama Africa’ was the first rapper in Ghana to fuse the Bono language with Ashanti Twi in his songs. The rapper delved into music at a young age, spanning different tunes.

Known for his amazing sultry sound, the artiste announced that he’s working on an EP, titled Class struggle which will contain 6 songs.

In November 2015, his song ‘Power to the People’ was ranked the third most downloaded Ghanaian hip-hop song on iTunes and was ranked the third top-selling artist on iTunes that same year.

The rapper and poet said, “I was born to do music. And I only speak positive words in songs.”

He added that albeit he has spoken to M.anifest about a collaboration, it is yet to materialise, adding, “I would like to collaborate with M.anifest. We connect easily, and we are on the same path. Giving power to the people and living a positive life, promoting peace in Africa and Ghana. We spoke briefly but it wasn’t fruitful, I think I need to reconnect with him again.”

According to him, his favourite tunes to listen to are blues, jazz, and Afrobeats, “With the Afrobeats, I’m talking about the Ebo Taylor, Fela Kuti kinds of Afrobeats.”

He advised his fans to keep their heads up and make good of any bad situation they find themselves in, “People are talking about hardship but they need to keep their mind positive and try to make good of every bad situation.”
