Medical screenings and blood donations mark MTN’s support for “Ashantifest”

The festival, introduced under the leadership of the new Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene showcases traditional foods, dances, games, and historical sites across the region

Telecom giant MTN Ghana has been commended by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) for its continued support towards the ongoing Ashantifest — a month-long celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Asante people.

The festival, introduced under the leadership of the new Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene showcases traditional foods, dances, games, and historical sites across the region.

On Thursday (17 April), the ARCC team visited MTN’s exhibition stands at the Methodist Church in Kumasi, where the company had partnered with authorities to conduct medical screenings for inmates at the Ashanti Main Prison and a public blood donation drive.

“I am happy that MTN Ghana knows the importance of supporting initiatives that would mutually benefit the people in the region as well as the institutions and companies like theirs operating within this jurisdiction,” the Minister said.

Focus on Prison Welfare

Later in the day, at a durbar held at the Adum Prisons precincts, the Ashanti Regional Prisons Commander, DDP James Mwinyelle, praised the ARCC for including medical outreach in the Ashantifest agenda.

He specifically lauded the Regional Minister — a trained medical professional — for personally participating in the screening of inmates.

“Currently, our Prisons at Adum, Amanfrom, Manhyia and Ahensan have inmates that are able to design artefacts and other items such as beads, traditional hats, detergents and African prints,” he said.

“All we need is to secure partnerships so they can do this on a larger scale and earn a livelihood after their release.”

Mr Mwinyelle urged the Regional Council to continue prioritising prison welfare and integrate inmates into broader social development programmes.

Public Response

At the MTN medical stand, members of the public expressed appreciation for the company’s outreach.

Akua Agyeman, a trader, shared how access to blood donations saved her relative’s life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“I take the opportunity to donate blood anytime I am well and fit to do so,” she said.

Alex Amankwah, a storekeeper in Adum, praised MTN for its long-standing commitment.

“I am an MTN customer, and what I like about this brand is that they take the welfare and wellbeing of Ghanaians seriously,” he said.

A Decade of Impact

For over 12 years, MTN Ghana has used the Ashantifest platform — held annually in June — to invest in education, healthcare, and empowerment projects across the region.

Communities such as Ejisu, Fumso and Akyawkrom have benefited from school buildings, libraries, and ICT centres provided during past editions of the festival.

Aside from corporate activations and data services, the company says Ashantifest is a reflection of its belief in giving back to the people of Ashanti.
