McDan reiterates commitment to airport land investment despite legal tussle

For McDan, this dispute is not just about land but a defense of his legacy as a pioneering investor who chose to develop the area when others hesitated

Prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur McDan has defended his long-standing stewardship of a strategic piece of airport land in Accra, following a recent court ruling that granted the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) possession of the property.

The ruling, delivered by the High Court in Accra on 6 May, awarded GACL full re-entry and possession of over 16 acres of land near Kotoka International Airport (KIA), previously held by McDan Group subsidiaries – McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited. GACL had cited breaches of land lease agreements and outstanding ground rents totaling $26,296 as grounds for its legal action.

However, the McDan Group has filed for a stay of execution and is pursuing an appeal, maintaining that it has acted in good faith over nearly two decades.

The company highlights its investments in the area, including funding security patrols for over 12 years and constructing warehouses to prevent encroachment. These measures, the company says, were part of efforts to protect and develop the land.

For McDan, this dispute is not just about land but a defense of his legacy as a pioneering investor who chose to develop the area when others hesitated. His decision to work directly with the traditional allodial owners from La, Teshie, and Nungua, rather than formalizing title through the Lands Commission, was driven by a desire to maintain strong community ties.

Supporters of McDan argue that his contributions have not only safeguarded the land but have also created economic opportunities for local communities. They view the recent legal developments as a potential attempt to disregard these efforts.

The McDan Group maintains that it is committed to exploring all legal options to protect its investments and ensure that its legacy in the area is not erased.
