Manhyia Palace takes over Daddy Lumba marital dispute after Great Oath is invoked

A family dispute over who should be legally recognised as the wife of the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, has been transferred from the court to the Manhyia Palace after his sister invoked the Great Oath — known in Asante custom as Ntam Kɛseɛ.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, during a court hearing involving a case filed by Akosua Serwaa, the late musician’s first wife, challenging another claimant’s status as Daddy Lumba’s lawful spouse.

Following the court proceedings, the invocation of the Great Oath immediately shifted jurisdiction from the court to the Asantehene’s Palace, in accordance with Asante traditional law.

At a sitting presided over by the Saamanhene and other chiefs at the Manhyia Palace on Friday, 7 November 2025, the family head, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, was fined two sheep for failing to contest or neutralize the invocation of the oath.

According to Asante custom, once the Great Oath is invoked, the matter becomes sacred and must be resolved through traditional adjudication at the Manhyia Palace. The fine, in the form of sheep, will be used by the chiefs to perform purification rites to revoke the oath and prevent any spiritual repercussions.

Meanwhile, despite the customary process now underway, the legal case is expected to return to court on 12 November 2025, for further hearing.
