A majority of delegates of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) want Johnson Asiedu Nketia to remain the party’s national chairman, according to a new Global InfoAnalytics survey, even as debate intensifies over the party’s leadership ahead of the 2028 general election.
The poll found that 61% of delegates supported calls for Asiedu Nketia to continue as national chairman, while 26% opposed the proposal and 13% said they had no opinion.
The findings mark a sharp increase from the previous survey conducted in April, when 42% of delegates backed his continued leadership and 39% opposed it.
The survey also measured support for Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson to lead the NDC into the 2028 presidential election against the New Patriotic Party’s expected candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
It found that 58% of delegates supported Ato Forson becoming the party’s presidential candidate, while 23% opposed the idea and 19% remained undecided.
The poll suggested that support for Ato Forson extended beyond his core supporters. Among delegates who currently preferred Asiedu Nketia as the party’s presidential candidate, 25% also said they would support Ato Forson to lead the NDC into the 2028 election.
The findings point to a distinction between delegates’ preferences for the party’s organisational leadership and their choice of a future presidential candidate, with Asiedu Nketia enjoying strong backing to remain chairman while the race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama remains competitive.
Global InfoAnalytics conducted the survey between July 8 and July 14, interviewing 5,637 NDC delegates across all 16 regions through computer-assisted telephone interviews.
The polling firm said the survey has a 99% confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7%.
