Major General Kotia ends transformative tenure at Ghana Boundary Commission

Major General Dr. Emmanuel Wekem Kotia has officially stepped down as Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission (GhBC), transferring leadership to Brigadier General Anthony Ntem on Thursday (8 May).

In a statement, Major General Kotia expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the founding head of the Commission since its establishment in 2019

Reflecting on his tenure, Major General Kotia highlighted the significant achievements of the Commission over a relatively short period, attributing these successes to divine guidance and the dedication of the Commission’s staff and partners.

He acknowledged the collaborative efforts that have been instrumental in advancing the Commission’s mandate.

Major General Kotia’s leadership has been marked by notable accomplishments, including facilitating boundary negotiations with neighboring countries and contributing to the development of national security policies. His tenure has been recognized for enhancing Ghana’s boundary governance and international cooperation.

Major General Dr. Emmanuel Wekem Kotia is a distinguished officer of the Ghana Armed Forces with a military career spanning over 40 years. Commissioned into the Artillery Corps in 1986, he has held various command and instructional roles, including Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment and Deputy Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

Internationally, Major General Kotia has served in multiple United Nations peacekeeping missions across Africa and Asia, such as UNIFIL in Lebanon, UNTAC in Cambodia, UNAMIR in Rwanda, and MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His contributions to peacekeeping have been recognized for their impact on regional stability.

Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Ghana, a Master of Science in Global Security from Cranfield University in the UK, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Ghana. He has also served as a lecturer and visiting professor at institutions including Kennesaw State University in the USA and the University of Bedfordshire in the UK, focusing on subjects related to security and conflict studies.

Major General Kotia’s contributions extend to policy development, having been involved in drafting key national security legislation and frameworks in Ghana. His expertise has been pivotal in shaping the country’s approach to boundary management and security.

As he transitions from his role at the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Kotia leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service and significant contributions to Ghana’s national security and boundary governance.
