John Osae Kwapong says President John Dramani Mahama’s second stint in office reflects a deliberate effort to distinguish itself from the challenges that marked his first presidency.
Assessing President Mahama’s leadership one year into his return to office, the political analyst said there is clear intentionality in policy tone, engagement style, and prioritisation aimed at avoiding earlier governance and economic setbacks.
“There is a conscious effort to make the second presidency look distinct from the first,” Osae Kwapong said on the Asaase Breakfast Show.
He noted that President Mahama appears to have reflected on both the successes and shortcomings of his first term, particularly those that contributed to his defeat in the 2016 general election.
“You can see evolution — an effort to navigate the pitfalls that made the first presidency more challenging,” he explained.
On governance, Osae Kwapong said ongoing constitutional reforms could strengthen Ghana’s democratic architecture if key recommendations from the Constitutional Review Committee receive public and parliamentary support.
He cautioned, however, that economic recovery must be sustained through prudent fiscal choices to avoid reversing gains made over the past year.
Based on key indicators such as inflation, exchange rate stability, and debt management, Osae Kwapong rated the government’s first year nine out of ten, describing the performance as “strong but still requiring discipline.”
