Mahama’s 120 days marked by “failure, excuses and empty promises” – Nana B fires

Nana B said the President had come into office with overwhelming expectations yet had failed to live up to his own pledges

Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B and National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has delivered a scathing critique of President John Dramani Mahama’s 120-day social contract, describing the government’s performance as a “complete letdown” marked by broken promises, insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday, 10 May 2025, Nana B said the President had come into office with overwhelming expectations yet had failed to live up to his own pledges.

“He made a lot of promises but has failed on many ends,” Nana B said.

“I knew the NDC would disappoint, but I didn’t expect it to happen this early.”

Citing worsening insecurity in Bawku, Nana B blamed what he called “reckless campaign rhetoric” from Mahama, claiming the President took sides in local conflicts for political gain. “Even the IGP had to run for his life, his car was shot at. Mahama Ayariga cannot go back home. That’s the state of our nation,” he charged.

He also accused Mahama of breaching his own commitment not to dismiss public servants appointed in the final year of the Akufo-Addo administration. “Over 30,000 appointments have been terminated,” he claimed.

Galamsey, Tariffs, and Taxes

On the environment, Nana B said illegal mining (galamsey) had reached “horrific levels”, adding that even the Trade Union Congress had observed the situation was now “worse” under Mahama.

“Waters are drying up, pollution is worse, and yet they are failing to act decisively,” he said, adding that despite repealing some levies, the government had increased electricity and water tariffs by 14% and 4%, respectively. “You scrap some taxes and then raise utility costs. Ghanaians are worse off now,” he said.

Failed Promises, Abandoned Projects

Nana B pointed to unfulfilled promises such as the scrapping of the COVID Levy and the restoration of cocoa prices to GHC 6,000, calling them “shameless U-turns”. He mocked the government’s MahamaCares initiative, claiming it was launched without resourcing key health projects like the Agenda 111 hospitals initiated by the NPP.

He also slammed the government’s economic forums as “media optics” with no real impact on the cost of living. “They held press conferences on riverbanks in opposition; now they hold them in five-star hotels. This is all about optics, not action,” he quipped.

On Job Creation and Social Policy

Reacting to ongoing job creation programmes like the Ajumapa and National Apprenticeship initiatives, Nana B questioned the implementation timelines and called for transparency. He argued that the burden on ordinary Ghanaians had increased, not reduced, since Mahama took office.

Internal Party Introspection

Commenting on the NPP’s post-defeat strategy, Nana B confirmed the party was undertaking an internal review, including a Thank You Tour and the study of the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee Report. “We are listening, learning, and preparing to bounce back,” he assured.

He also defended former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s gold purchasing programme, claiming it was the reason for recent gains in cedi stability and reserves. “That’s a bold legacy of the NPP, not this government,” he added.
