John Mahama has described China’s zero-tariff concessions as a potential game-changer for Ghana and Africa but warned that the benefits will only be real if countries expand production.
Speaking during his engagement with the media on Wednesday (10 September) at the Jubliee House the president said “It’s an incentive for us to export into the Chinese market. And we need to look at the items that China imports and see where we have a comparative advantage,” Mahama said.
He pointed to meat and maize as products China currently imports heavily from the United States, noting that trade tensions between Washington and Beijing could open the door for Ghana.
“If we have arable land and we’re in a position to expand our production, then the zero tariff will make meaningful sense. But it is just a figure if we’re not able to respond and be able to export into the Chinese market,” he said.
Mahama added that the offer provides “an opportunity for diversification of markets,” at a time when tariff wars are undermining the global trading system.
